The development
SAP announced the close of its Dremio acquisition on 6 July 2026. Dremio is an open data lakehouse platform built on Apache Iceberg, designed to let organisations query and run workloads across disparate data sources in place — without copying or migrating data into a central repository.
The acquisition is positioned as a foundational layer for SAP Business Data Cloud, SAP's unified data and analytics product. The intent is to give customers a single analytical surface over SAP application data (S/4HANA, SuccessFactors, Ariba, and others) alongside data held in third-party cloud data platforms, object stores, and lakehouses.
SAP frames the move as directly accelerating the data foundation required for its agentic AI ambitions — specifically, enabling Joule-based agents to reason over governed, real-time enterprise data without requiring that data to first land in a SAP-managed store.
What it actually means
What is genuinely new: Dremio's query federation capability — zero-copy access via open table formats — is a technically credible answer to a real problem: most enterprises have data scattered across Snowflake, Databricks, AWS S3, and SAP systems simultaneously. Owning Dremio gives SAP a vendor-controlled path to span those silos rather than relying on third-party connectors.
What to treat carefully:
- Zero-copy federation still requires semantic consistency. Querying across systems in real time does not resolve naming conflicts, schema drift, or missing lineage — the governance work still falls on the customer.
- SAP Business Data Cloud itself is still maturing. Dremio is a component of a platform that most customers are not yet running in production.
- The agentic AI framing is forward-looking. Agents that reason across live enterprise data depend on this infrastructure being deployed, governed, and secured — none of which happens automatically at close.
- Customers already invested in Databricks or Snowflake integrations with SAP should watch whether SAP's roadmap deprioritises those connectors in favour of the native Dremio path.
For the majority of SAP customers still on ECC, or on S/4HANA without a clean data model, this acquisition does not move their practical AI readiness date.
What to watch for
Watch whether SAP publishes a concrete availability timeline for Dremio capabilities within SAP Business Data Cloud — specifically, when existing Business Data Cloud tenants can access Dremio-powered federation in production. That milestone, more than the acquisition close, is the signal that the agentic data foundation is real for paying customers.
